Life’s hard when you’re a superhero. Take Batman, for example. Gotham’s inhabitants know he exists, and they certainly complain when his escapades cause disruption in the city centre. But how many of them actually take notice of the hard work he puts in behind closed doors (or caves) to keep the bad guys at bay and the city safe? A small percentage at best.
In some ways, the same can be said of Openreach. As the unsung heroes of fibre broadband infrastructure, they’re unfortunately at their least visible when things are working perfectly. Not enough people in the UK fully realise the lengths at which they go to to keep us all connected.
To combat this, Openreach tasked us with creating a series of FAQ-style films, giving Openreach’s best and brightest the chance to explain what they do, as well as handing out some top tips on how to keep their customers’ WiFi ‘super-fast’.
As it turns out, ensuring the whole of the UK is connected at all times keeps Openreach pretty busy, and so to keep disruption to a minimum, our crew needed to be as agile as possible, pouncing on any filming opportunity at the drop of a hat.
Often travelling to London with short notice, we managed to send in a bare-bones crew to set up, light and shoot the required interviews in a matter of minutes. Our speedy insertion and ability to shoot in any location, be it an HQ, by the side of a road or in the middle of a construction site, meant that Openreach was able to be available for shoots whilst keeping boots on the ground.
The final films took the form of small, digestible pieces of online content that could be used to demystify many of the questions that the general public might have about Openreach and what they do. After all, not all heroes wear capes…some wear high-vis jackets.
